SMART: FitPay’s Pagaré NFC strap brings contactless payments to Pebble Time watches

Wearable payments company FitPay has launched a campaign on Kickstarter to crowdfund the production of an NFC payment smartstrap for the Pebble Time family of smartwatches.

“The new smartstrap, called Pagaré, enables Pebble Time, Pebble Time Steel and Pebble Time Round users to make secure, contactless payments at millions of retail locations worldwide,” the company says. “Pagaré will use NFC technology combined with card network tokenization to interact with POS terminals at retail locations.

“Pagaré will leverage FitPay’s Trusted Payment Manager platform, which enables contactless payment capabilities on a wide range of wearable devices.”

A video gives an overview of the Pagaré smartstrap:

“We expect Pagaré will really excite our community,” says Eric Migicovsky, founder and CEO of Pebble. “It’s a great example of how our open platform allows Pebble to become even more useful in the everyday lives of more people.”

The company closed a US$3.1m seed funding round led by Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) last week. It first began working on Pagaré with connected watch maker Connectedevice in November 2015. The company expects to begin shipping Pagaré in mid-2016.
