Banks pilot NFC, QR and BLE payments in Luxembourg

A Digicash beacon

Bank-led payment service Digicash has expanded its QR-based mobile payments platform to include new POS beacons that support NFC, QR and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) — “automatically providing the customer with the best user experience based on the features of his smartphone.”

The new Digicash Beacons are being tested in Luxembourg “under field conditions” by banks BCEE, Post and BIL at Cora supermarkets, Apple reseller Lineheart and “some convenience stores.”

The service has been integrated with Digicash apps issued by retail banks and funds for purchases made are drawn directly from the customer’s existing bank account using SEPA Credit Transfers.

The new system is the outcome of R&D efforts over the “last few months”, the company says, and a large-scale roll out is planned for the second half of 2014.
