MasterCard, American Express and Visa have all signed deals with Apple for the launch of a mobile payments service that will make use of an NFC chip built into the next iPhone, due to launch on 9 September, according to reports in a number of publications including the Financial Times, Bloomberg and Re/Code.
- Re/Code reports that Apple has signed a deal with American Express for a mobile payments service that will be unveiled with the next iPhone on 9 September. Apple will also unveil a wearable device at the launch event but it won’t ship until early 2015, the website adds.
- Bloomberg reports that Apple “plans to turn its next iPhone into a mobile wallet through a partnership with major payment networks, banks and retailers” and has signed deals with Visa and MasterCard as well as American Express. The mobile payments service will use both NFC and the Touch ID fingerprint verification technology that was introduced with the iPhone 5S in 2013, Bloomberg says. A patent application from Apple that shows how the two technologies could be used together was published in September 2013.
- The Financial Times reports that “NXP will provide the secure near field communications chips that will allow an iPhone to connect with payment terminals or ticketing systems, as well as opening up the possibility for other applications in the “internet of things”.
- Apple blogger Sonny Dickson has received images from modified iPhone maker Feld & Volk that appear to clearly show the new iPhone’s logic board with an NXP NFC chip on board.
- The Loop reports that invitations have been sent out for the launch event which is now confirmed to take place on 9 September at 10:00 PST.
The reports follow news last week that evidence is building for the inclusion of NFC in the iPhone 6 and that Apple will make use of an NXP chip to deliver NFC functionality.
