Isis, the US NFC joint venture between mobile network operators AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile, has chosen Gemalto‘s Allynis trusted service manager solution as its core mobile commerce platform.

“We selected Gemalto for its long-standing relationships with financial institutions and mobile operators, which include experience in securely provisioning services over the air and issuing sensitive financial information to the consumer,” says Ryan Hughes, Isis’ chief marketing officer. “Gemalto’s dedication to security is unmatched in the industry and will provide the Isis mobile commerce platform with the necessary infrastructure to ensure consumer and merchant confidence in the Isis Mobile Wallet.”

“Gemalto is thrilled to support Isis in delivering the speed, security and convenience of mobile contactless payment,” adds Gemalto North America’s Sébastien Cano. “Using our extensive experience with worldwide commercial deployments Gemalto has designed a solution for Isis to support mobile payment and a host of NFC services like digital couponing and loyalty programs, access control and mass transit.”

First announced in November 2010, Isis is due to begin service in mid-2012 with pilots in Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas.

Isis had originally planned to offer its own mobile payments service but it unveiled a new, open strategy in May 2011. The switch of approach was followed in July with the news that Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express had all agreed to work with Isis and, in September, with the announcement that leading handset makers including HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, RIM, Samsung Mobile and Sony Ericsson had all agreed to implement Isis NFC and technology standards.

Recent industry rumours have suggested that the pilots would be delayed until the end of 2012, but Isis confirmed to NFC World last week that its plans are on track and the first pilots will take place in mid-2012 as planned.

As well as Gemalto, Isis has also announced that users will be provided with mobile wallet software developed by C-Sam, which supports NFC payments, rewards, coupons, tickets, transit and other services.
