The Toughshield R-500 is a rugged NFC handset designed for remote workers and made by UK-based robust smartphone specialist Toughshield Devices Limited.
A 3.77-inch 480 by 800 multi-touch capacitive screen is protected by Gorilla Glass, and the unit runs Android 2.3.
An NXP PN544 NFC controller ensures support for ISO15693, 14443A/B, Mifare 1K, Mifare Ultralight and Mifare Ultralight C standards. Peer-to-peer, card emulation and read/write modes are supported. Dual SIM slots mean that scenarios such as dual private and corporate SIMs or separate wallet and airtime SIMs are possible.
For imaging a 5MP rear camera with autofocus and flash is paired with a 0.3MP front camera.
The R-500 also has dedicated PTT and SOS buttons.
The device has an ingress protection (IP) rating of 67 and is MIL-STD-810 rated, and comes with a 1500mAh battery which is upgradeable to a 3760mAh unit.
The current retail price is around £359 for a single device, Toughshield told NFC World, though the company points out that most sales are to enterprise clients and the price per device gets lower with order quantity.
