Nokia has unveiled a new NFC-enabled high-end smartphone. As well as NFC functionality, the Nokia N9 is distinguished by the lack of a home key. Instead, home key functionality is replaced by a finger swipe gesture. “Whenever you’re in an application, swiping from the edge of the display takes you home,” says Nokia. “With no need for a home key, the all-screen Nokia N9 makes more room for apps to shine.”

The N9 features a 3.9-inch Amoled screen, a one-piece polycarbonate body designed to provide superior antenna performance and an 8MP camera. The device runs MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan and is scheduled to arrive in stores later this year in black, cyan and magenta colour options.

“With the Nokia N9, we wanted to design a better way to use a phone,” says Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s head of design. “To do this we innovated in the design of the hardware and software together. We reinvented the home key with a simple gesture: A swipe from the edge of the screen. The experience sets a new bar for how natural technology can feel.

“And this is just the beginning. The details that make the Nokia N9 unique — the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers — will evolve in future Nokia products.”
