Google job ad confirms plans to enter payments market?

Google has begun recruiting a ‘Technical Account Manager, Mobile Commerce’ who will be involved in building partnerships with merchants, card issuers and POS solution providers — indicating clearly that the internet giant plans to make a move into the mobile payments market.

The new recruit will also ideally have experience with NFC technology and POS systems integration as well as merchant loyalty, coupon and incentive programs, suggesting that Google plans to use NFC technology to offer merchants a payments platform that combines both card processing and mobile marketing services.

According to a job description for the vacancy which is now live on its website, Google is looking for:

a self-motivated individual looking to drive solutions for an emerging business and solidify Google’s strategic partnerships and initiatives across a variety of partnerships that include merchants, issuers, point-of-sales (POS) solution providers, mobile OEMs, etc.

Applicants will also need:

At least 5 years of hands-on experience in Internet products and technologies, and knowledge of one or more of the following: NFC/RFID technologies, different chipset ISO specifications, integration with POS readers & systems and payment processing, technical implementation of merchant loyalty, coupon or incentive programs.

The position will be based in either Mountain View or San Francisco, California.
