The mobile operator and the bank-owned transaction processing supplier are testing a Mobile Virtual Wallet with potential applications in payments, transport, healthcare and personal identification.
Mobile operator Telefónica Espana has launched a “comprehensive pilot project” to test out the use of NFC to deliver payment services through mobile phones. For the pilot it has teamed up with Sermepa, the technical arm of ServiRed, the transaction processing service owned by 102 Spanish card issuers who, between them, have nearly 40 million cards in circulation and operate over 32,000 ATMs.
The trial will provide a real-world test of Telefónica’s NFC platform and Sermepa’s applications provision system and will include the ability to issue, activate and cancel various financial cards over-the-air. Trial participants will be able to store their financial cards on their SIM and, via the Mobile Virtual Wallet application, will be able to choose which card they wish to use at the point-of-sale.
Details of the size and duration of the pilot have not yet been released.
