TELECOM ITALIA: “NFC services will soon be available to all of our clients, from individuals to major corporations and government departments”

Telecom Italia has begun an NFC pilot in the city of Milan. Timed to coincide with the GSMA’s NFC & Mobile Money Summit, which takes place in the city this week, the 1,000 pilot participants can use NFC phones to pay for public transportation and taxi rides, make purchases in stores and collect information from smart posters.

The pilot covers Milan’s bus, tram, subway and train services as well as around 1,000 retail outlets. Coupons and discount vouchers are also being tested, in partnership with trade associations Confcommercio, Confartigianato and Confesercenti.

Tourist information signs have also been equipped with NFC tags for the project and an interactive tour of the Leonardo da Vinci machines pavilion at the Museum of Science and Technology has also been delivered.

A video produced by Telecom Italia shows the service in action:

Telecom Italia is also providing attendees of the NFC & Mobile Money Summit with Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 NFC phones they can use to test out the service during the event.

“Telecom Italia has proven that SIM-based NFC services are already a reality, and that they are extremely simple and secure for customers to use,” says Oscar Cicchetti, head of strategy at the operator. “Telecom Italia’s commitment and agreements with major partners and aggregators of this ecosystem, including Intesa Sanpaolo, ATM, Trenord, Kinetic and Logital, ensure that NFC services will soon be available to all of our clients, from individuals to major corporations and government departments.”

PAYPASS READY: Brand mark can appear on phones, packaging and ads

MasterCard has announced that it has added NFC phones from seven device makers and designers to the list of handsets certified for use with its PayPass technology.

The new devices are:

Two BlackBerry NFC phones, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and the BlackBerry Curve 9360, were certified by MasterCard in October 2011 and the Nokia Lumia 610 NFC was approved at launch in April.

Several of the new phones have already also been certified by Visa for its PayWave contactless payments solution. Visa’s approved phone list includes the Samsung Galaxy S II, LG Optimus Net NFC, the Nokia Lumia 610 NFC, the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Bold 9790, Curve 9380 and Curve 9360 as well as the Intel smartphone reference design.

MasterCard also unveiled a new “brand identifier” — “MasterCard PayPass Ready” — that device manufacturers can use with NFC-enabled smartphones that have been tested and certified by MasterCard for use with PayPass technology.

“The MasterCard PayPass Ready identifier will signify a device is available for commercial deployment of PayPass, and can be included as a sticker on the approved device, and in an approved device’s packaging, marketing collateral and advertisements,” the payments network explains.

Both Nokia and RIM have already committed to supporting the new brand mark.

“Nokia is honored that the Nokia Lumia 610 NFC will be one the world’s first smartphones to include MasterCard’s PayPass Ready brand mark,” says Andrea Bacioccola, NFC lead program manager at Nokia. “This sends a clear message to operators, banks and other service providers that Nokia is able to quickly enable their payment services on this smartphone.”

“We are pleased to support the MasterCard PayPass Ready brand mark as it provides consumers with a visual confirmation that an NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphone can easily be enabled with a MasterCard account for tap-and-go payments,” adds Andrew Bocking, SVP of software product management at RIM.

“In the near future, millions of phones will ship with NFC technology embedded within them,” says MasterCard mobile boss Mung-Ki Woo. “The new PayPass Ready identifier will help consumers make informed device purchasing decisions by providing a visual mark that indicates devices are certified to make simple, smart and secure payments via the MasterCard PayPass network.”

Samsung has announced two new smartphones in the run up to next week’s Mobile World Congress, and both have optional NFC functionality.

The Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 and Samsung Galaxy Ace 2

The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 are described by the phone maker as “ideal devices for users with active lifestyles who value individuality and style without compromising on performance or affordability.”

The Samsung Ace 2 has a 3.8-inch screen, GPS, and a dual core 800MHz processor, while the compact Galaxy Mini 2 boasts a 3.27-inch screen.

Both handsets run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and incorporate “optional” NFC. There is no word yet on which markets and carriers will get the NFC version, and the only signs that the Mini 2 is NFC enabled are that it will be 0.3mm thicker and just 1.5g heavier than its non-NFC equivalent.

The Galaxy Ace 2 will be available in UK from April, says Samsung, and the Galaxy Mini 2 will be available in France from March before being rolled out globally.
