Eight in ten merchants expect real-time payments to replace debit and credit cards in Europe

One in four European merchants has experienced data theft — ACI Worldwide — “80% of European merchants believe that real-time payments will replace the use of debit or credit cards over time (in the Netherlands, 100% of merchants hold this view; in Belgium 87% and Germany 84%), 76% of merchants believe that real-time payments will help to save their business money, 63% believe real-time payments will reduce their payments acceptance costs. Half of all European merchants (48%) plan to increase their investment in payments technology in 2018.”

Majority of EMEA retailers plan to increase investment in payments — ACI Worldwide — “55% of retailers and merchants in the EMEA region are planning to increase their investment into new payment capabilities in the next 18 to 24 months… 66% say they are willing to pay more for a broader range of payment services if they add value to their business. 89% say they would expect increased operational efficiency and 88% enhanced customer experience from their investment.”

Mobile payments rise in popularity, reaching tipping point in some countries — ACI Worldwide — “17% of US consumers now regularly use their smartphone to pay, up from 6% in 2014… In Europe, Spanish consumers are the most active users of mobile wallets, with 25% using them regularly, followed by Italy (24%), Sweden (23%) and the UK (14%). India tops the list of countries surveyed, with 56% of consumers saying they pay with a smartphone regularly”.

Google to let users make in-app and online payments with any stored card and add P2P payments to digital assistant

Google Assistant

Google has unveiled a new payment API that will allow customers to make payments through third party mobile apps, websites and the company’s voice-based Google Assistant using “any credit or debit card stored in their Google account” from across a range of services including Android Pay, Google Play and Google Chrome. The API will also let customers use a stored card to complete transactions via a new peer-to-peer (P2P) payments feature that will be added to the digital assistant. More
