The Nokia NFC Shell CC-229D was an NFC-enabled ‘shell’ add-on that fitted over a Nokia 3220 handset to bring early near field communication capability to the phone.
The shell could handle reading and writing to Mifare Standard, Mifare Standard 4K and Mifare Ultralight tags. Four tags shipped with the device, and each could be used for storing a shortcut which could be “an SMS-based service, a URL of an internet-based service, or a phone number of a telephone service.” A Java application called ‘Service Discovery’ allowed the user to read and write tags as well as share shortcuts to another Nokia 3220 equipped with the Nokia NFC shell.
The device was launched in 2005 and is no longer available.
