When I have to get a new American Express card, American Express will remind me of those payees, like Amazon and PayPal, that have the old card on file. On the other hand, I use a few proxies like Amazon and PayPal to reduce the number of merchants that might otherwise store, and potentially compromise, that card number.
Wells Fargo is now offering a similar service. Ideally all issuers would offer this service.
