G&D uses TSM technology to protect industrial products against counterfeiting

PARTNER NEWS: Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) is working with chip maker Renesas to apply the lessons learned from the use of trusted service management technology in mobile payments to a new market — protecting industrial products against counterfeiting.

Giesecke Devrient logoThe first products to benefit from this technology are programmable logic controller (PLC) boards used in the automation of industrial electromechanical processes, such as factory assembly lines. The solution consists of specially designed chip activation technology developed by Renesas on the PLC board and trusted service manager (TSM) technology from G&D.

These enable the PLC boards to be produced in a way that means they are only partly functional until they have been securely activated by the G&D TSM.

“The new thing here is that G&D applies long-standing experience of managing secure endpoints like SIM cards, like UICCs, like TEEs, via TSM services to a new business domain and a new secure endpoint,” Udo Schwartz, head of research and development at G&D 3S in Munich, told NFC World.

“Counterfeits not only threaten the revenue of the OEMs; counterfeited products also pose a security hazard when being used in production as they are usually of lower quality,” says Michael Hannawald, vice president of Renesas Electronics Europe’s Industrial & Communications business group.

“Renesas will deliver protected devices to system manufacturers which are activated at the production line of the system manufacturers by our trusted service manager, which is provided by Giesecke & Devrient. G&D is a renowned provider of TSM services in the mobile world for SIM cards, UICCs, and embedded secure elements.

“Renesas now benefits from this TSM service expertise and system manufacturers can incorporate TSM-based security solutions into their products and service offerings.”

Renesas Electronics Europe and Giesecke & Devrient collaborate on industrial anti-counterfeiting solutions

Dusseldorf/Munich – Renesas Electronics Europe, a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, and Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), a leading international technology provider in the banknote, payment, secure communication and identity management sectors, today announced its collaboration for industrial security solutions and services. The two technology partners’ first solution, demonstrated at the SPS IPC Drives in Nuremberg, focuses on anti-counterfeiting solutions for industrial products.

The solution is designed to protect industrial companies against counterfeiting and to further strengthen their security measures. It contains Trusted Service Manager (TSM) technology from G&D and special chip activation technology on the Renesas RZ/T device. “Statistics show, that the counterfeiting of products across all industries is on the increase worldwide. Counterfeits not only threaten the revenue of the OEMs; counterfeited products also pose a security hazard when being used in production as they are usually of lower quality. Together with G&D, we have found a methodology to prevent counterfeits”, states Michael Hannawald, vice president of Industrial & Communications Business Group from Renesas Electronics Europe. “Renesas will deliver protected devices to system manufacturers which are activated at the production line of the OEMs by our Trusted Service Manager (TSM), which is provided by Giesecke & Devrient. G&D is a renowned provider of TSM services in the mobile world for SIM cards, UICCs and embedded secure elements. Renesas now benefits from this TSM service expertise and system manufacturers can incorporate TSM based security solutions into their products and service offerings.”

“We look forward to working with Renesas since the jointly developed solutions are a big leap toward real-time security on the chip level, which will benefit industrial facilities,” adds Axel Deininger, head of the Enterprise Security/OEM division in the Mobile Security business unit at G&D. “For the first time, we are demonstrating a TSM service from our certified TSM hubs around the world, combined with semiconductors with embedded anti-counterfeiting technologies. This cooperation with Renesas allows us to address the emerging challenges of the connected industry.”
