CaixaBank launches HCE mobile payments app

CaixaBank Pay app, allowing for HCE mobile payments
CAIXABANK PAY: Service could be used by 70% of bank’s mobile banking customers

Spain’s CaixaBank has broadened its range of mobile payment services with the launch of CaixaBank Pay, a new app based on host card emulation (HCE) that allows users to make online and in-store payments at any contactless terminal. The bank estimates that the service could be used by more than 70% of its mobile banking customers.

“With the new payment app, customers can download their CaixaBank Visa cards to their mobile phones and use the phone like a contactless card for purchases at any retail outlets with an adapted POS terminal,” the bank says.

“Over 70% of stores in Spain now operate with this technology, implying more than 600,000 POS terminals.

“In addition to making payments, CaixaBank Pay users can also check their statements and manage their purchases. For instance, customers can see how much credit they have available and check the latest movements on the cards. The app can also be used at contactless ATMs. CaixaBank is also developing other value-added services related to mobile payments for the app.”

“The new app is based on HCE technology, which allows for secure downloading of financial cards,” CaixaBank adds.

“This way, CaixaBank Pay makes it easy for any customers with a CaixaBank Visa card and Android phone to make payments, irrespective of their telecommunications operator.

“Customers can download all their CaixaBank cards to their phones. The service is available for all Visa credit, revolving and debit cards issued by the bank.”

CaixaBank partnered with Telefonica, Vodafone, Orange and Visa for Europe’s largest NFC payments service in December 2013. Last year, it became the first bank in Europe to launch a Visa-branded wristband that allows users to make contactless payments, signed a €500m agreement with Fujitsu for the delivery of contactless ATMs and launched a joint venture for mobile offers.

It most recently launched an app which allows customers to use voice commands to perform simple online banking operations, opening the way for drivers to check balances and initiate transfers as they travel.
