The Google Prepaid Card service will end on 17 October, Google has announced, due to the arrival of the new Google Wallet 2.0 NFC service.
“Since we recently launched the ability to use any debit or credit card in Google Wallet, we are going to discontinue the Google Prepaid Card soon,” the search giant explains.
From 17 September, users will no longer be able to add funds to their Google Prepaid Card or add a new Google Prepaid Card to a new device. The service will then close altogether on 17 October. On that date, says Google, “your Google Prepaid Card will disappear from the Wallet app and you won’t be able to spend your balance any longer.”
Anyone with a balance remaining on their prepaid card will be able to request a refund of their outstanding funds after this date — but a US$2 monthly fee will be introduced from 17 October that will act to gradually reduce the remaining balance until it is claimed.
