Dubai-based bank Emirates NBD has announced the launch of an NFC-based payments service called MoneyMobile.

The service is currently undergoing pilot testing in the United Arab Emirates with staff of the bank and its partners — mobile network operator Etisalat, payments network Visa and technology provider Gemalto.

This test phase will enable Emirates NBD to “gain valuable insights into the customer experience, which we will incorporate into this offering before the wider consumer launch,” says R Sivaram, head of the bank’s card business.

“Emirates NBD is delighted to introduce this exciting new technology, which is in line with our role as the leading provider of next-generation banking solutions for customers,” says Sivaram. “Offering multiple levels of security, the MoneyMobile solution clearly represents the retail experience of the future.”

“We are excited at this opportunity to work with a dynamic and progressive partner like Emirates NBD, to revolutionize the consumer payment experience here in the UAE,” adds Etisalat’s Marwan Al Qadi.

Emirates NBD first teamed up with Etisalat, Visa and Gemalto to introduce commercial NFC services in October 2009 but the partners’ plans have been delayed by a lack of NFC handsets.
