Towards global standards for NFC — in payments and in electronic ID

OPINION: In separate moves, three organisations have taken significant steps forward in the move towards global standards for NFC, not only in payments but also in the electronic ID market.

EMVCo, the standards body responsible for setting the global EMV payments specification, has issued a call to all interested parties to discuss plans for a global NFC payments standard. In Germany, meanwhile, Bundesdruckerei has issued a similar call for the harmonization of NFC and eID standards to allow NFC phones to be used with electronic ID cards to secure online transactions.

And GlobalPlatform, whose specifications are used in more than 300 million smart cards and two billion SIM/USIM cards, has also set out its NFC stall, detailing the technical architecture required to deliver true multi-application, multi-actor, multi-business model NFC systems.

Standards have never been so exciting!
